HELENA ALEKSANDROVA
Hello,
I am Helena, a Helsinki-based artist and independent filmmaker with a background in film theory. My works explore urban mythology, genre cinema, and subcultures, blending surrealism with emotional editing and captivating visuals.
I play with female representation in pop-cultural narratives as a tool to uncover the undergarments and layers of Western visual culture.
I engage with moving images through the roles of director, editor, performer, production designer and costume designer.
I work with analogue and digital cinema.
I am a co-founding member of a film collective Film Tonight! together with Mariangela Pluchino, Roxana Sadvokassova and Jelica Jerinic.
Member of Av-Arkki & Filmverkstaden.
I hold a double BA in Film & Video Theory from Bard College, USA and Smolny College, St.Petersburg, Russia. In 2017, I received a Master's degree in Visual Culture and Contemporary Art from Aalto University, Finland. In 2019, I was a participant of the Academy of Moving People and Images (AMPI). In 2021, I joined AMPI in a position of coordinator.
I received grants from SKR, Kone Foundation, TAIKE, AVEK. My works were shown in Finland, Belgium, Croatia, Latvia, Spain Germany, and Czech Republic.

Outside of my moving-image practice, I do analogue photography & organise events focused on live music, alternative spaces, and grassroots community culture. I often combine the two resulting in a DIY archive of Helsinki music scene.
For me, organising an event is a lot like staging a film scene.
I have organised screenings, sound events, November Rain fest, a stage at Kallio Block Party, parties for Love & Anarchy Film Festival, events with Kino Konepaja, and more.
